According to the International Civil Aviation Organization Performance-Based Navigation Manual, airspace procedures should be designed to reduce track miles, avoid noise-sensitive areas, and reduce emissions through the use of efficient descent paths by minimizing terminal area maneuvering (i.e., unwanted throttle movement) and periodic altitude constraints.

Performance-based Navigation (PBN) is helping the global aviation community reduce aviation congestion, conserve fuel, protect the environment, reduce the impact of aircraft noise and maintain reliable, all-weather operations, even at the most challenging airports. RNP is also a statement of navigation performance necessary for operation within a defined airspace. A critical component of RNP is the ability of the aircraft navigation system to monitor its achieved navigation performance, and to identify for the pilot whether the operational requirement is, or is not, being met during an operation.

Personnel involved in airspace design need to understand the PBN concept Performance requirements are identified in navigation specifications, which also identify the choice of navigation sensors and equipment that may be used to meet the performance requirements. PBN specifications provide specific implementation guidance in order to facilitate global harmonisation. Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Performance Based Navigation (PBN) is an ICAO concept, based on harmonising global navigation specifications with the aim of simplifying future standards while also making flight operations more efficient.

Performance Based Navigation (PBN) A standalone e-learning short course for Performance Based Navigation. On successful completion of the lessons and Progress Tests you can apply to us to issue a Certificate as proof of completion. You will then be required to pass an oral examination with an assessor prior to taking the PBN IR Skills Test. Pilots may only fly in accordance with PBN routes and

Performance Based Navigation (PBN) - Introduction Introduction. Historically, aircraft navigation specifications have been specified directly in terms of sensors Course Content. Learning Objectives. After training, the person is able to identify navigation systems in relation to PBN as well as Performance Based Navigation (PBN) The PBN module is for pilots flying turboprop and jet aircraft with advanced avionics capable of navigating using Global Positioning System (GPS) and multiple sensor, Flight Management System (FMS)-based Area Navigation procedures. The module provides background information and references along with a review of RNAV and RNP instrument flight procedures including departure, en-route, arrival, and approaches. Key to achieving this is through the application of Performance-based Navigation (PBN). In parallel, the UK navigation infrastructure can also be optimised to take advantage of the lateral navigation accuracy from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) while retaining adequate conventional ground-based navigation aids to ensure both resilience and contingency measures.
